Showcasing a Victorian luminary
The Laverton is an imposing Grade 2 listed Victorian building in Westbury, Wiltshire, built by Abraham Laverton in 1873. It is now owned by the Laverton Institute, a charitable trust.
The problem
The brief was to provide an interpretative narrative on the life and works of Abraham Laverton, the Victorian Entrepreneur, Mill Owner, Politician and Philanthropist. The aim of the project being to raise interest and awareness of the Laverton family’s significant role the development of the town and to enhance the experience of Westbury’s ‘Blue Plaque Trail ‘ for local inhabitants, visitors, school groups. A small permanent exhibition is held at the Laverton, home of Westbury Town Council.
The solution
We created a series of ten display panels each telling a separate narrative. This meant that their individual location wasn’t critical and they could also be easily repositioned. Funding support through the Heritage Lottery Fund ‘Sharing Heritage’ stream enabled us to broaden the brief to provide a dedicated website for the exhibition which was carried to by students at Artswork Media.
